Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan is mourning the tragic deaths of two young Indian American women who lost their lives in an ocean accident last week.
“Our Fremont community is heartbroken by the tragic loss of Harshita Nair and Mahial Sran, two Washington High School graduates whose young lives were filled with promise,” Salwan said in a social media post. “My deepest condolences are with their families, friends, classmates, and everyone grieving this unimaginable loss.”
Both victims grew up in the Silicon Valley city. Salwan, India-born, assumed office as the mayor of Fremont in December 2024.
“As our community mourns, I also urge everyone visiting the coast to take ocean warnings seriously. Sneaker waves, strong currents, and rising tides can strike without warning. Please check tide and hazard conditions, stay away from the water’s edge, and never turn your back on the ocean,” Salwan, who is Fremont’s first Indian American mayor said. Prior to his mayoral term, Salwan served on the Fremont City Council for over 18 years.
Nair, 21, and Sran, 20, both residents of Fremont, were swept into the ocean in Santa Cruz County, California, on June 10. Authorities said the two friends had made their way through a keyhole formation at Panther Beach in Bonny Doon to sunbathe when they were cut off by a ‘sneaker wave’ just before sunset.
“Their access back down the beach had been completely cut off by water and large surf,"” said Cal Fire spokesman Michael Horn. Following the incident, officials urged beachgoers to remain vigilant in unfamiliar areas, pay close attention to warning signs, and respect the dangers of powerful surf and rapidly changing tides.
