New York assembly member and mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani hosted U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders for an evening of Hyderabadi cuisine on Sept. 5.

“Shared a meal with @BernieSanders at Hyderabadi Zaiqa last night,” Mamdani posted on X sharing glimpses from the meeting.

Sanders, an early endorser of Mamdani’s mayoral bid, has consistently praised the candidate’s grassroots appeal and progressive platform. In June, he described Mamdani’s campaign as “inspirational,” calling him a “visionary leader” whose proposal to tax the wealthy was a bold challenge to entrenched billionaire influence in politics.

Mamdani, in turn, has expressed admiration for Sanders, calling him “one of my heroes” after their first meeting in July during a campaign workshop hosted by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Washington, D.C.

The dinner comes at a pivotal moment in Mamdani’s campaign. The 33-year-old assembly member won the Democratic primary against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and now leads a crowded nine-way field ahead of the November general election.

He has also secured endorsements from Ocasio-Cortez and former Mayor Bill de Blasio, and is regarded as the frontrunner in a race drawing national attention.

Mamdani has advanced a sweeping progressive agenda that includes rent freezes, fare-free buses, city-run grocery stores, universal child care, a $30 minimum wage by 2030, and higher taxes on corporations and millionaires.

Recent polls place him at about 42 percent support, ahead of Cuomo and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams. He has also challenged President Donald Trump’s involvement in the race by calling for a televised debate with him directly.
