India’s ties with Russia, China spark unease at U.S. hearing

India’s presence alongside Russia and China at a recent summit in Beijing drew pointed remarks in Washington, as Senators pressed Sergio Gor, President Donald Trump’s nominee for Ambassador to India, on how he would keep New Delhi aligned with U.S. interests.
At the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, concern was evident over India’s position in the shifting global order. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (Democrat) voiced unease at “Prime Minister Modi standing alongside Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping at the summit in Beijing earlier this month,” warning that “pushing India into a closer relationship with China is a serious setback to U.S. interests”.
