Indians in Burlington to celebrate Diwali and culture at Burlington Commons

Indian Americans for Burlington’s (IAB) Diwali celebration will feature cultural performances, traditional attire, and authentic Indian cuisine.

Diaspora community organization, ‘Indian Americans for Burlington’ (IAB) is set to celebrate Diwali with a cultural event titled “Threads of India” on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2024, at Burlington Commons. 

The event will showcase the richness of India’s traditional weaves and handicrafts through various activities for attendees of all ages, a news release stated. Apart from the cultural performances  a kids’ entrepreneurship segment, and art and craft activities are also included in the festivities.

The main highlight of the event is a fashion show in line with the events theme “Threads  of India” which will showcase the beauty of traditional Indian attire and craftsmanship. 

In addition to cultural activities, the celebration will have a culinary element. “The Treasury Kitchen” will serve authentic Indian dishes, providing attendees a taste of India’s diverse cuisine. Smita Kapadia, IAB secretary, added that boutique vendors would offer traditional Indian garments, modern goods, and henna art. Attendees can also enter raffles for a chance to win prizes

"This year’s theme, ‘Threads of India,’ not only reflects the beauty of our traditional weaves but also our shared values and heritage. We hope everyone will come out to enjoy the day and experience the warmth of our community,” said IAB treasurer Atul Bhamar. 

The celebration is expected to draw a large, diverse crowd. Local students are encouraged to participate, with organizers hoping the event fosters a deeper sense of pride in cultural traditions and community spirit. Guests from the town’s select board and other local organizations have also been invited to emphasize the inclusive nature of the event.
