Authorities said Sharma’s body was found in the water at about 7 p.m. by the New Jersey State Police Technical Emergency and Mission Specialists unit.
A GoFundMe campaign organized by Rakesh Ahirwar identified Sharma as a father of two and said he died while enjoying a family picnic.
“It is with profound sadness that friends and family share the tragic and unexpected loss of Kaushik Sharma, an Edison, NJ resident and dear friend,” Ahirwar wrote.
The fundraiser described Sharma as a “kind, generous, and compassionate person” who was known in the Edison, BAPS, Edison School PTO Board and Gujarati communities.
“He was a true go-to person, always ready to help others without hesitation,” the fundraiser said.
Sharma’s death has left his wife and two young children grieving. The campaign said members of the local community have been coming together to support the family.
The fundraiser also said Sharma’s family is in the United States on dependent visas, adding to the financial challenges following his death. The campaign is raising money to help cover funeral expenses and living costs for the family.
The campaign has raised $65,046 of its $300,000 goal, with 812 donations.
