Born in Uganda to Indian American filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood Mamdani, Zohran is a self-described democratic socialist and is calling for what he hopes will be the largest volunteer operation in the city's history.

Zohran Kwame Mamdani, the 33-year-old son of Indian American filmmaker Mira Nair, announced in an X video on Mar.24 that he has reached the maximum allowable fundraising limit for his New York City mayoral campaign. In an unusual plea for a politician, Mamdani urged supporters to stop sending money and instead donate their time.

"I'm about to say something you've never heard a politician say," Mamdani declared in the video. "Please stop sending us money."
