Consul General of India in Atlanta visited Florida this week, meeting with university officials, students, and Indian American community members to advance educational partnerships and strengthen diaspora engagement.

During his visit to the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville, the Consul General Ramesh Babu Lakshmanan held high-level discussions with UF president Ben Sasse, the dean of the International Center, the provost, executive vice president for research, and the senior vice president.

The talks focused on expanding joint academic programs, research collaborations, and student exchange initiatives between India and the United States. A key area of focus was artificial intelligence (AI), with discussions around developing an AI Center specializing in agriculture and medicine.

“They explored avenues for deepening India-US educational collaboration, with focused discussions on joint programs, research partnerships, and AI including courses on AI Center on Agriculture medicine,” the Consulate said in post on X.

These discussions align with the India–U.S. Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET), launched in 2023 to foster bilateral cooperation in emerging fields such as AI, quantum computing, and biotechnology. The initiative aims to “foster innovation, joint research, and academic exchange—benefiting students, faculty, and institutions in both India and the U.S. through shared knowledge and global opportunities,” the Consulate added.

The Consul General also interacted with Indian-origin students at UF, learning about their academic journeys and career aspirations. He encouraged them to actively contribute to Indo-U.S. relations through innovation, research, and community service.

In a separate engagement, he met with members of Florida’s Indian American community. He acknowledged their contributions across diverse sectors including medicine, academia, business, and public service, and provided updates on Government of India welfare schemes and initiatives for the global Indian diaspora.
