The Government of India has opened nominations for the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards (PBSA) 2027, its highest civilian recognition for overseas Indians.

The awards honor contributions by Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), or organizations and institutions established by them for significant work either overseas or in India.

For contributions outside India, eligible categories include efforts that promote a better understanding of India abroad, support India’s causes, strengthen links between India and overseas Indian communities, advance social and humanitarian causes, improve the welfare of local Indian communities, and undertake philanthropic and charitable work.

The awards also cover professional excellence and skill-based contributions that enhance India’s prestige abroad.

For contributions within India, the awards acknowledge philanthropic investments, charitable activities, and other work that supports national development.

Nominations may be submitted by executive heads of prominent overseas Indian associations with a nationwide character, excluding their own office-bearers. Previous PBSA award recipients are also eligible to nominate candidates. Self-nominations by individuals and organizations are permitted.

Indian missions worldwide are facilitating the nomination process, with deadlines set by respective consulates and high commissions. Eligible individuals and organizations are required to submit completed nomination forms along with supporting documents, including a summary of achievements, to the designated Indian mission or directly to the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.

Official nomination forms, the prescribed summary format, and the PBSA award gazette notification are available for download on government portals, officials said.

Instituted in 2003, the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards honor individuals and diaspora-led institutions for their role in strengthening ties between India and its global communities, promoting India’s interests, and fostering goodwill internationally.

The awards form part of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, with the 19th edition scheduled to be held in January 2027. The PBSA is traditionally conferred during the convention’s valedictory session.
