Diya Vij / Creative Time
Diya Vij, the Vice President of Curatorial and Art Programs at Powerhouse Arts, has been appointed as the Cultural Commissioner of New York City by the Zohran Mamdani administration. Born and raised in an Indian immigrant family, Vij has been a NYC resident for over a decade.
Vij will be heading the Department of Cultural Affairs, leading the largest municipal funder of the arts in the US, providing funding to over 800 cultural organizations throughout the city’s five boroughs. Last fiscal year, the DCA provided $245 million in funding to the city's cultural circuits.

Announcing the news, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs said on X, "Congratulations (and welcome home) to Diya Vij, the next Cultural Affairs Commissioner of New York City!"
Talking about the appointment of Vij, Mamdani highlighted what lies ahead for his new appointee and said, "Under Diya’s leadership, we will fight to keep New York a city where artists can afford to live and create and where every New Yorker, in every borough, can experience the energy and inspiration that makes art possible".
Vij holds Bachelor's degree in Photography and a Master of Arts in Art History from Bard College, Criticism and Conservation from Hunter college, both in New York.
Apart from her role at Powerhouse Arts, she is also a curator at Creative Time. Vij previously worked at the City's Department of Cultural Affairs for 4 years, till 2019.
She has also worked at Friends of the High Line and the Queens Museum of Art.
