Suromurchhana to host classical concert in NYC

The event is being organized to mark the 80th birth anniversary of Tabla maestro Padma Shri Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri.

Suromurchhana, a New York based nonprofit organization for Indian classical music, will be hosting a concert on Oct. 25, at Scandinavia House in New York City.

The event is being organized to mark the 80th birth anniversary of tabla maestro Padma Shri Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri.

Pandit Chaudhuri is a renowned Indian tabla maestro of the Lucknow Gharana, celebrated for accompanying legends like Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan, and honored with India's Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1996.

Starting at 6:00 PM, the concert will feature Pandit Chaudhuri, performing alongside Sanjoy Banerjee and Kedar Naphade.

Banerjee is a distinguished vocalist and an exponent of Kirana gharana tradition and Naphade is a harmonium exponent known for his sensitive accompaniment.

The concert will commence with a performance by Namami Karmakar, representing the new generation of Indian classical vocalists and known for her renditions of raga, bhajan and thumri. She will be accompanied by Dibyarka Chatterjee on tabla and Shri Anirban Chakrabarty on harmonium.

The event will also pay tribute to musical titans and gurus of Shri Sanjoy Banerjee, Pandit. A. Kanan and Vidushi Malabika Kanan.

Suromurchhana's Artistic Director, Sanjoy Banerjee, remarked, "This event is more than a tribute—it’s a living dialogue between tradition and expression."
