The Sikh Coalition has registered its protests with the Texas State Board over exclusion of Sikhism in the 'key topics draft', even though other religions and belief systems were referenced.

Tarnoor Kaur, the Texas Education Fellow at the Sikh Coalition, attended the Texas State Board of Education meeting which discussed newly released key topics and subtopics, which are intended to guide the revision of the Texas Social Studies standards.

In its latest update, the draft includes sections on how Hinduism and Buddhism shaped societies in ancient India but fails to mention Sikhism at any point. Kaur testified to the board on Jan. 28 and expressed concern over the exclusion.

Raising concern over the issue, Kaur said, "This absence is alarming, especially since Sikhi has been included in the Social Studies standards since 2010, which came after sustained advocacy from the Sikh Coalition and the Texas Sangat.

She added, "The Sikh Coalition will not accept a process that erases Sikhi from Texas education and treats its inclusion as optional."
