The Sant Nirankari Mission Center in Westbury, New York, held a blood drive on Nov. 16 in collaboration with New York State Sen. Steve Rhoads, continuing the Mission’s global blood donation campaign that began in 1986.
“Every year we get about 70–100 units of blood donated in New York, which started here in 2010,” said Sanjeev Powari, the head of the Westbury center. The drives, held twice a year in partnership with various state government bodies, take place at the current center, which opened in 2019. The Mission collected 71 units in April 2025 and 74 units in December 2024. The New York Blood Center is a key collaborator in the campaign.
“The Nirankari Mission is a beautiful representation of the Indian diaspora here in America because it reflects openness and a willingness to serve. The idea that unites the world is the understanding that we are not here for ourselves but to make an impact on the community around us. The Mission does that so well,” said Senator Rhoads at the event.
The Mission is a spiritual organization based in Delhi, India, founded in 1929 by Baba Buta Singh. Mata Sudiksha has been its sixth spiritual head since 2018. The organization has over 3,000 branches worldwide and about 27 chapters in the United States.
The Mission received Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC in 2012 from the United Nations, and was elevated to General Consultative Status in 2018.
“The majority of the participation is from the Indian community here, irrespective of faith, as the Mission started in India. Whenever there are needs or emergencies, the Mission is always in service,” Powari added. The center has previously served as a quarantine facility during the Covid-19 pandemic and provided support during floods in the state in 2021 and 2023.
