Jain currently serves as Brown’s senior vice president for health affairs and dean of medicine and biological sciences, roles he has held since joining the University in 2022.

In a Feb. 10 message to the Brown community, president Christina H. Paxson and provost Francis J. Doyle III cited Jain’s leadership in advancing research and education in medicine and the life sciences at Brown and across Rhode Island.

“Since joining Brown in 2022, Mukesh has worked to develop and implement a vision for an integrated biomedical ecosystem that allows innovations to move from discovery to real-life impact, seeking both to improve human health and to enhance economic vibrancy in Providence and Rhode Island,” Paxson and Doyle wrote.

“With the additional role of senior associate provost for life sciences, he will extend this work, stewarding the continued expansion of life sciences research across the University,” they added.

As senior associate provost, Jain will work to align institutional resources and elevate collaborative, cross-disciplinary initiatives in partnership with campus departments, schools, hospitals and external partners.

He will chair a new advisory group on the life sciences to help advance research from discovery through clinical and translational impact. Jain will also chair planning efforts for the William A. and Ami Kuan Danoff Life Sciences Laboratories, slated to open in 2027, with an emphasis on defining scientific priorities and maximizing collaboration and impact in the new facility.

“It’s a privilege to take on this role at a time of extraordinary momentum for the life sciences at Brown,” Jain said. “I’m excited to work closely with colleagues across the University and with affiliated partners to strengthen collaborative, cross-disciplinary research and education. Together, we have an opportunity to build something distinctive with lasting impact for our community and beyond.”

At Brown, Jain has partnered with affiliated health system leaders to establish the Brown Innovation and Research Collaborative for Health, or BIRCH, to strengthen the biomedical research enterprise across the Division of Biology and Medicine, Brown University Health and Care New England. He has also helped recruit scientific leaders to launch the Brown RNA Center and secure philanthropic support to endow and name it the Giuliani RNA Center.

Jain has worked with University leadership to advance major investments in research centers, strategic initiatives and capital projects across the life sciences, positioning the Danoff Laboratories as a cornerstone of Brown’s long-term research strategy. He has also expanded training pathways across undergraduate, graduate, medical, master’s and postdoctoral programs.

Before joining Brown, he served as chief academic officer at University Hospitals in Cleveland, vice dean for medical sciences at Case Western Reserve University, and scientific director of the Harrington Discovery Institute.

He earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University at Buffalo, completed residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and pursued fellowships at the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
