ZEE5 Global has announced the release of Regai, a seven-episode Tamil original crime thriller that will premiere on Nov. 28.

The series is created, written and directed by Dhinakaran M and draws its central premise from the fictional universe developed by crime novelist Rajesh Kumar.

Starring Bala Hasan, Pavithra Janani and Vinothini Vaidyanathan in lead roles, Regai follows S.I. Vetri and constable Santhiya as a routine pursuit turns into a disturbing investigation.

The narrative begins with the accidental death of an ice-cart vendor who flees during a police chase. Vetri later finds a severed hand hidden in the melting ice, leading him into a trail involving medical trials and a clandestine network where “every answer opens a darker door.”

The series is produced by S. Singaravelan under the S.S Group Production banner and also features Pobalam Pragathesh, Sriram M, Anjali Rao and Indrajith E.

Rajesh Kumar said the project explores how new interpretations of his ideas continue to expand the genre. “Every crime story begins in the human mind before it reaches the page. What interested me in ‘Regai’ is how it takes a simple idea and follows it into the darker corners of our society,” he said.

Director Dhinakaran described the show as an attempt to depict violence that often goes unnoticed. “The series is about the quiet violence that happens out of sight, the kind that never makes it to a police report but destroys lives all the same,” he said.

Lead actor Bala Hasan said the role required exploring emotional vulnerability. “Vetri is a man who spends his days chasing answers but is terrified of the truths he finds,” he said.

Lloyd C Xavier, Tamil and Malayalam business head and asnior vice president south marketing at ZEE5 Global, said the series underscores the value of native storytelling. “Regai is not just a thriller, it is a reminder of why native storytelling matters. It exposes the silences behind the mystery,” he said.
