Brussels held its inaugural Indian Film Festival last week, bringing a slate of contemporary Indian cinema to European audiences and marking a new milestone in the country’s cultural ties with India.

The festival, organized by the Embassy of India in Belgium and Luxembourg, opened on Nov. 29 at Cinema Flagey, with the screening of the Bollywood film ‘83,’ a biographical sports drama that follows Kapil Dev as he leads India's struggling cricket team to make history at the 1983 World Cup.

In his opening remarks, Indian Ambassador to Belgium Saurabh Kumar noted the global reach of Indian films, highlighting that the industry’s storytelling formats continue to draw audiences beyond India.

Several sequences from ‘83’ drew applause from the audience, describing the film as a strong opening choice given its familiarity among international viewers. Its inclusion set the tone for a program that leans on films with established global traction.
