Diwali & Vaisakhi Could Soon Become Official Holidays in Michigan

May 2026 17 views 2:04

Two of India’s most widely celebrated festivals — Diwali and Vaisakhi — could soon receive official state recognition in Michigan, as lawmakers introduce new bills to add both observances to the state’s list of recognized holidays. House Bill 5838 seeks to designate Diwali as an official state holiday, while Senate Bill 906 proposes recognizing April 13 and 14 each year as Vaisakhi. Supporters say the move reflects Michigan’s growing diversity and the rising presence of Hindu and Sikh communities across the state.
