California prisons allow religious headgear for visitors, Sikhs benefit

2025 202 views 01 Min 10 Sec

In a landmark policy shift, California's prison system now allows visitors to wear religious headgear—including turbans during visits. This update marks a significant step forward for religious freedom, especially for members of the Sikh community, who have long faced challenges accessing loved ones in prison due to restrictive dress code policies. For years, Sikh visitors were often forced to choose between their faith and visiting incarcerated family members, as turbans and other religious coverings were either banned or subjected to invasive scrutiny. Thanks to advocacy from civil rights organizations and faith-based groups, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) has revised its policy to ensure that all visitors can maintain their religious identity without discrimination.
