Indian American New York City Council Member Zohran Mamdani publicly addressed online attacks against his wife on May 12.
In an Instagram post, Mamdani criticized what he described as a coordinated attempt to shift focus away from policy issues in the New York City mayoral race, which he recently entered. The post followed days of speculation on social media, where users accused Mamdani of “hiding his wife” Rama Duwaji and called out her pro-Palestinian artwork.

“Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama, at the City Clerk’s office,” Mamdani wrote on Instagram. “Now, right-wing trolls are trying to make this race — which should be about you — about her.”
“I usually brush [criticism] off, whether it’s death threats or calls for me to be deported,” he continued. “But it’s different when it’s about those you love.”
Duwaji, 27, is a Brooklyn-based illustrator whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and VICE. The couple celebrated their engagement in Dubai in December 2024, where her family resides, and were married in a civil ceremony in New York earlier this year.
Mamdani concluded his post by asserting that political attacks should not target candidates’ families. “You can critique my views, but not my family,” he wrote.
Mamdani, a sitting New York State Assemblymember representing Queens, has recently gained traction in the Democratic mayoral primary, polling second behind former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Known for his progressive platform and alignment with the Democratic Socialists of America, Mamdani currently represents Astoria, Queens, in the New York City Council.
