Vikrant C. Aute to direct University of Maryland Energy Engineering Center

In his new role, Aute will lead cutting-edge research, expand collaborations, and drive sustainable energy innovation.

The University of Maryland (UMD) has appointed research professor Vikrant C. Aute as the new director of the Center for Environmental Energy Engineering (CEEE). 

Aute, who has served as the center's co-director since 2019, will now lead CEEE in its mission to advance sustainable and economically viable energy conversion systems for buildings and transportation.

The center’s research has played a key role in addressing industry challenges and enabling cost-effective technology transfer. Under Aute’s direction, CEEE will continue to lead the field of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R), with a focus on expanding its contributions to sustainable energy system technologies, the University said in a statement. 

“Under Vikrant’s leadership, CEEE will continue to define the forefront of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) research and development, while expanding its use-inspired scholarship across new areas of sustainable energy system technologies,” says Harry Dankowicz, chair of the UMD department of mechanical engineering, which houses the center.

Aute, an internationally recognized expert in heat exchanger innovation and thermal system optimization, has been instrumental in developing modeling and optimization platforms that have revolutionized HVAC&R system design. 

His industrial experience includes positions at Thermax Ltd., Tata Infotech Ltd., and Daikin Industries Ltd. He is a Fellow of ASHRAE and ASME and has received multiple prestigious awards for his contributions to the field.

He holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from UMD and has been honored with the UMD Provost’s Excellence in Research Award and the Dean’s Outstanding Performance Award from the Clark School of Engineering.

Since its establishment in 1991, CEEE has been a leader in developing innovative technologies in air conditioning, refrigeration, heat pumping, and integrated cooling, heating, and power systems.
