Indian American electrical engineer Veena Misra assumed the role of interim dean of North Carolina State University's College of Engineering last month after serving as head of its Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
A nationally recognized researcher, Misra is the M.C. Dean Distinguished University Professor and founding director of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Advanced Self-Powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST), which focuses on wearable, self-powered technologies for health and environmental monitoring.

“Dr. Veena Misra is an accomplished scholar, leader and proud NC State alumna whose career reflects the very best of our university’s strengths in research, innovation and service,” executive vice chancellor and provost Warwick Arden said.
“Her record of excellence as a researcher, educator and department head, combined with her deep understanding of the College of Engineering and its strategic priorities, makes her exceptionally well-suited to lead the college during this transition. I am grateful for her willingness to serve in this important role,” he added.
Misra joined the NC State faculty in 1998 after working at Motorola’s Advanced Products Research and Development Laboratories in Austin, Texas. Over nearly three decades at the university, she has led research in advanced semiconductor devices, nanoscale technologies, energy harvesting and ultra-low-power sensors, authoring more than 150 research papers.

As founding director of the ASSIST Center since 2012, Misra has overseen the development of battery-free and body-powered wearable technologies while building a broad network of academic and industry partnerships.
She has also served on the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Microsystems Exploratory Council and the board of the National Science Foundation Directorate for Engineering Advisory Committee.
A Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Misra has received numerous honors, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the NSF Award for Professional Opportunities for Women in Research and Education, the Alcoa Distinguished Engineering Research Award and NC State’s Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence.
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, which Misra has led since 2024, is recognized for its role in major research initiatives such as ASSIST and the FREEDM Systems Center, as well as its work in emerging fields including quantum computing and next-generation semiconductor technologies.
Misra earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University in 1991, followed by a master’s degree in 1992 and a Ph.D. in 1995, all in electrical engineering from the university.
NC State said a national search for a permanent dean of the College of Engineering will be announced in the near future.
