USISPF names Taranjit Sandhu board advisor, chairman of geopolitical institute

Sandhu’s association with USISPF dates back to his tenure as Indian ambassador to Washington, where he collaborated closely with the forum.

USISPF hosted a farewell reception for Ambassador Sandhu in Washington, DC in January 2024 to mark the end of a successful four-year stint as India’s envoy to the U.S. / USISPF

The US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) has appointed veteran Indian diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu as an advisor to the board and chairman of its geopolitical institute.

With a diplomatic career spanning nearly four decades, Sandhu previously served as India’s envoy to the United States and played a pivotal role in deepening U.S.-India relations.

In his new role, Sandhu will guide USISPF’s strategic focus on major geopolitical initiatives including the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), the Quad (Indo-Pacific Quadrilateral Dialogue), and the I2U2 (India, Israel, U.S., and UAE) grouping.

Commenting on his appointment, Sandhu said, “I have had the opportunity to work on as well as follow the India-US story for over three decades. The relationship has evolved into a Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, underpinned by shared values and interests, matured in character and nurtured by the vibrant people-to-people ties between the two countries.”

Under Sandhu’s leadership, the bilateral relationship reached new heights with historic moments such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2023 state visit to the U.S., President Biden’s attendance at the G20 summit in New Delhi, and President Trump’s 2020 India visit. Earlier, he had served in Washington as Deputy Chief of Mission to MEA S. Jaishankar and played a key role in Modi’s landmark 2014 Madison Square Garden address.

USISPF president Mukesh Aghi praised Sandhu’s depth of experience and diplomatic insight, calling him “one of the brightest minds New Delhi has sent to Washington.” “Having worked closely with Ambassador Sandhu during his diplomatic days, I am eager to engage with him in this new avatar, this time with his new USISPF hat,” Aghi said.

Sandhu will now help advance USISPF’s work in multilateral settings, supply chain resilience, energy security, and people-to-people ties. His leadership is expected to further cement the strategic bond between the world’s largest democracies.
