US tile industry ceeks tariffs on Indian imports over unfair competition

The Department of Commerce has initiated investigations in response to the petition. If the findings support the allegations of unfair competition, the US government may impose tariffs on Indian tile imports.

In a bid to protect its domestic market, the American ceramic and tile industry is seeking import tariffs on products from India. This move comes amidst claims of unfair competition and dumping practices that allegedly undermine US manufacturers.

The Coalition for Fair Trade in Ceramic Tile (TCNA), a major industry association, has filed a petition with the US International Trade Commission and the Department of Commerce. They allege that Indian ceramic and tile imports are subsidized, leading to artificially low prices that harm American producers.

Eric Astrachan, Executive Director of TCNA, emphasized the impact of these imports on the US market. He stated, "American tile manufacturers have always welcomed fair competition from imports. However, Indian tile producers enjoy substantial government subsidies, which, in conjunction with selling excess capacity at dumped prices, has allowed them to flood the US market."
