Indian American Impact endorses Nirav Shah in Maine U.S. Senate race
The organization says Shah's campaign reflects a commitment to affordable health care and immigrant communities.

Indian American Impact has endorsed physician and former public health official Nirav Shah in his campaign for the U.S. Senate seat from Maine, citing his leadership record and grassroots campaign organization.
In a post on X, Indian American Impact said Shah has demonstrated what "people-first leadership looks like" and pledged that, if elected, he would work to lower health care costs, hold powerful interests accountable and advocate for immigrant communities. The organization said it has supported Shah "from the very beginning" and reaffirmed its endorsement as he enters the Senate race.

The group noted that, if elected, Shah would become only the second South Asian American to serve in the U.S. Senate and the only South Asian American currently serving in the chamber.
Shah, 49, announced his Senate campaign on July 9, one day after Democratic nominee Graham Platner withdrew from the race following allegations of sexual assault. Shah previously served as principal deputy director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2023 to 2025 and earlier led the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Earlier this year, Shah ran in the Democratic primary for governor of Maine, leading the first round of ranked-choice voting before losing in the final round to Hannah Pingree.

Under Maine Democratic Party rules, a replacement nominee for the Senate race must be selected by July 27 ahead of the general election against Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who is seeking a sixth term.
According to Shah's campaign, his priorities include Medicare for All, ending U.S. arms sales to Israel, stronger environmental accountability for corporations, and higher taxes on billionaires and large corporations. The campaign has also said infrastructure from his gubernatorial bid, including communications, field organizing and fundraising operations, is being redirected to support the Senate campaign.
Indian American Impact is a national organization that works to increase South Asian American political participation and supports South Asian American candidates seeking public office across the United States. The organization has endorsed several Indian American candidates in federal and state races.
Collins, first elected to the Senate in 1996, is seeking a sixth term in what political observers expect to be one of the country's closely watched Senate contests.
