University of Nevada, Reno appointed professor Shamik Sengupta as the next chair of the department of computer science and engineering (CSE) in the College of Engineering.
Sengupta will assume the role on July 1, 2026, succeeding professor Eelke Folmer, whose term as department chair concludes on June 30, 2026.

A professor in the department of computer science and engineering and the executive director of the University of Nevada, Reno’s Cybersecurity Center, Sengupta holds the College of Engineering’s Ralph E. and Rose A. Hoeper Professorship.
His research spans a wide range of cybersecurity domains, including vulnerability assessment, malware analysis, security and privacy in information exchange, anomaly detection in cyber-physical systems, machine learning, network security, game theory, cognitive radio networks and dynamic spectrum access systems.
Since joining University of Nevada, Reno in 2013, Sengupta has led multiple federally funded research initiatives. He has received 12 grants from the National Science Foundation and has been recognized with the CSE Best Researcher Award on multiple occasions, as well as the College of Engineering Excellence Award in 2018.
He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed conference and journal publications and is the recipient of several best paper awards, including honors from IEEE GLOBECOM, SPECTS and IEEE CCWC.
In 2018, Sengupta was honored by his alma mater, the University of Central Florida, with the College of Engineering and Computer Science Distinguished Alumni Award. He was also named honorary commander of the 152 Communications Flight at the Nevada Air National Guard Base in 2022.
Prior to joining UNR, Sengupta served as an assistant professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the CUNY Graduate Center, and completed postdoctoral research at the Stevens Institute of Technology.
Sengupta earned his doctorate in computer engineering from the University of Central Florida. He completed his undergraduate education at Jadavpur University, India.
