UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham met children and young people in Mumbai this week and called for greater inclusion, equal opportunity, and long-term investment in the well-being of every child.

The visit included interactions with children participating in sports and community initiatives supported by UNICEF.

Beckham said he was moved by the determination shown by the children he met. "I am humbled by the drive, resilience, and passion of the children and young people I met today who are fighting for change at an early age and having a say in their future."

"They are truly inspirational and have conquered many challenges to be where they are today. Their journey is an important reminder that we must continue investing in children and young people," he added.

At Mumbai’s Cooperage Football Grounds, Beckham spoke with Khushi, 12, and Rohit, 10, who turned to football to build confidence and develop life skills. "I was always very quiet and withdrawn. Playing football helped me to open up and communicate better. I learned how to interact with others and make decisions," Khushi said.

He also met children involved in a UNICEF-backed initiative focused on improving living and recreational spaces in Mumbai through community participation. Tirth, 9, who helps convert school waste into compost, said, "When I saw our school waste turning into compost and helping plants grow—I realized we’re not just cleaning; we’re giving life back to earth."

UNICEF India representative Cynthia McCaffrey said Beckham’s continued engagement reinforces support for children facing critical challenges. "As UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador for the last 20 years, Sir David Beckham has consistently brought attention to the world’s children and the most pressing challenges they face."

"He is an inspiration for children in India and across the world, and his appreciation will encourage them to pursue their dreams and motivate them to reach their full potential," she added.

The visit highlights UNICEF’s ongoing collaboration with the Government of India to support children’s rights, focusing on health, nutrition, education, water and sanitation, child protection, social protection, and climate resilience.
