President Donald Trump was not joking when he said one motivation for his peace initiatives was to “get to heaven,” the White House insisted Aug.19, underscoring the president’s blend of spiritual framing and hard-nosed diplomacy.

Asked if Trump’s remark was tongue-in-cheek, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt replied: “I think the president was serious. I think the president wants to get to heaven, as I hope we all do in this room as well.”
