Trump Doubles Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum Imports Citing National Security Threat

The proclamation follows updated findings from the U.S. Department of Commerce, which determined that excessive imports of these materials continue to threaten national security.

In a move aimed at bolstering domestic industry and addressing ongoing trade imbalances, US President Donald Trump on June 3 signed a proclamation doubling tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to 50 percent ad valorem, effective June 4.

The proclamation follows updated findings from the U.S. Department of Commerce, which determined that excessive imports of these materials continue to threaten national security by undermining the health of the American steel and aluminium industries.
