Peter Donahue, Associate Director, International Student Support at Wilfrid Laurier University, says that cricket is making rapid strides in Canadian universities and colleges. He came all the way from Waterloo to new King City for the CCUC TD Cup national championship.

The Maple Leaf Cricket complex in the new King City has five turf wickets where Toronto and District League matches are played. It is also the first Cricket complex certified by the International Cricket Council for various formats of cricket.

The co-founder and Chief operating officer of Canadian College Cricket, Obaid Ullah Babar, is an alumnus of Toronto Metropolitan University. He says he introduced this tournament way back in 2015. Since then it has been gaining in popularity. Now nearly 40 institutions, including colleges and universities, from coast to coast to coast, have taken to the game seriously.

Obaid Ullah Babar comes from Peshawar in Pakistan.

In the final,  defending champions Toronto Metropolitan University batting first started well but could not maintain the tempo as Arjun Nagpal (2 for 18) and Jai Patel (2 for 16) bowled and maintained a tight line. If the Toronto Metropolitan batters could aggregate 142, it was mainly because of unbeaten half century by opener Isiah Fernandes. Incidentally, a hit to the maximum on the last ball helped him complete his half century. He got ample support from Aarav Kuyeskar who made a well-deserved 30.

Chasing a target of 142, Toronto University fell to the wiles of Kunal (2 for 12) and Shazil Sulman (3 for 14) as Saad Ur Rahman (32) and Eran Maliduwapathirana (21) did try to put up a fight.

In the losing semi-finalists game, Fayaz Ahmad Momand (75 not out) and Hariansh Chaudhary (25 not out) of Ontario Tech University were virtually unstoppable as they  remained unseparated in their opening wicket partnership while achieving the target of 116 in 8.5 overs. Brock University had scored 115 before being dismissed in 18.1 overs.
