Two men, including an Indian national, were sentenced on May 28 for their roles in an international human smuggling conspiracy that led to the tragic deaths of four Indian nationals — including two children — who froze to death near the US-Canada border in January 2022.
Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel, a 29-year-old Indian national formerly residing in Florida, was sentenced to 10 years and one month in prison and will be deported after serving his term. His co-conspirator, 50-year-old Steve Anthony Shand of Florida, received a sentence of six years and six months, followed by two years of supervised release, the Department of Justice said May 28.
