This Sikh Captain America battles hate with humor and healing

In an exclusive interview with New India Abroad, Vishavjit Singh talks about hiding and reclaiming his identity, and how storytelling became both shield and weapon in a country where his faith made him a target.

In an America where turbans still trigger suspicion and hate crimes against Sikhs are on the rise, Vishavjit Singh walks through crowds wearing a ‘Captain America’ superhero suit with turban, beard, and tights. But these are not easy times to be a visible minority. 

Just last month, Illinois Republican lawmaker Mary Miller drew outrage after misidentifying a Sikh spiritual leader as Muslim and insisting he should never have led the morning prayer in Congress. “It’s deeply troubling that a Muslim was allowed to lead prayer in the House of Representatives this morning,” she wrote in a now-deleted post. “America was founded as a Christian nation.”
