U.S. Senator Charles Schumer has named U.S. Magistrate Judge Sanket Jayshukh Bulsara as his recommendation for the role of district judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

Schumer officially submitted Bulsara's name for consideration to the Biden-Harris administration. President Biden has put forth the nomination of Judge Bulsara to serve as a district judge for the Eastern District of New York Court.

Describing Bulsara as a “first-rate legal mind and a dedicated, talented public servant”, the Senator lauded his work for the Securities and Exchange Commission where he served as General Counsel.  “He is an expert in securities, contract, bankruptcy, and regulatory matters, but his experience also extends to representing the incarcerated, victims of domestic violence, and individuals on death row in pro bono cases,” said Schumer.

“Sanket Bulsara is the epitome of the American Dream and a history maker: the child of hard-working immigrants from both India and Kenya, and the first South Asian American federal judge to serve on any court in the Second Circuit when he was appointed as a Magistrate Judge. I am proud to recommend Judge Bulsara to President Biden and I will work to confirm him as soon as possible,” Schumer added.

Judge Bulsara has held the position of U.S. Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District of New York since 2017. Before assuming his judgeship, he served as the Acting General Counsel of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Additionally, he held the role of Deputy General Counsel for appellate litigation, adjudication, and enforcement at the SEC.

Prior to that, Bulsara also held the position of Special Assistant District Attorney at the Kings County (Brooklyn) District Attorney’s Office and worked as the Manager of Planning and Data Analysis at the New York City Department of Education, Division of Human Resources in Brooklyn.

Earlier in his career, he clerked for Judge John G. Koeltl on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and worked for private law firms including Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr in New York, and Munger Tolles & Olson in Los Angeles.

Bulsara graduated with a J.D. from Harvard Law School with honors (cum laude), and obtained an A.B. from Harvard College with high honors (magna cum laude). He was born in the Bronx to an Indian immigrant before relocating to New Rochelle and subsequently to Edgemont, New York. His parents immigrated over 50 years ago, with his father employed as an engineer for the City of New York and his mother working as a nurse.
