San Francisco Unicorns retain top spot in MLC

The Unicorns strengthened their hold with a dominant nine-wicket win over MI New York.

San Francisco Unicorns defeated MI New York by nine wickets  at Grand Prairie,Dallas, on July 8.

The Unicorns chased down MI New York's total of 143 for 9, reaching 146 for 1 in 15.4 overs. Lhuan-dre Pretorius remained unbeaten on 102 off 52 balls to register his maiden MLC century, while the Unicorns' bowlers, led by captain Matthew Short, had earlier restricted MI New York to a below-par total.

San Francisco won the toss and elected to bowl. Short claimed 3 for 24, dismissing Quinton de Kock (6), Monank Patel (1) and Ryan Rickelton, who top-scored for MI New York with 35 off 21 balls. Aaron Hardie took 2 for 17 and Haris Rauf finished with 2 for 24.

Sunny Patel scored 32 off 23 balls for MI New York, while Nicholas Pooran made 19 and Kieron Pollard added 16. Corey Anderson contributed 12, and Romario Shepherd remained unbeaten on 11 as MI New York finished on 143 for 9 in 20 overs.

In reply, Finn Allen made 20 off 17 balls before he was dismissed by Romario Shepherd. Pretorius then added an unbeaten 94-run partnership with Short, who remained not out on 19 off 25 balls, to complete the chase with 26 balls to spare.

Pretorius hit 10 fours and five sixes during his innings and reached his century in 49 balls. Shepherd was the only wicket-taker for MI New York, returning figures of 1 for 17 from four overs.

The victory also improved San Francisco's net run rate and strengthened its position in the playoff race, while MI New York's playoff hopes suffered a setback.

Brief scores:  MI New York 143/9 in 20 overs (Rickelton 35, Sunny Patel 32; Short 3/24, Hardie 2/17, Rauf 2/24) lost to San Francisco Unicorns 146/1 in 15.4 overs (Pretorius 102*, Allen 20; Shepherd 1/17) by 9 wickets.
