The San Francisco Unicorns on July 7 announced the  launch of the Unicorns Sport Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed at expanding access to cricket and creating opportunities for young people across the San Francisco Bay Area.

The foundation has been established as a public charity and will use cricket as a platform to promote equity, inclusion and community engagement, a news release stated.

The foundation is backed by technology entrepreneurs and investors Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan, co-founders and co-owners of the San Francisco Unicorns, who said the Major League Cricket franchise will serve as a key commercial and operational partner.

The organization will focus on three priorities, increasing participation among girls and women, removing barriers to access and equity in sport, and developing grassroots cricket pathways and infrastructure across the Bay Area.

By 2030, the foundation aims to engage more than 10,000 young people, deliver 100 community programs and establish sustainable pathways connecting sports participation with education, leadership and personal growth.

“Sport is one of the most effective catalysts we have for building equity, confidence, and community, while cricket gives us a powerful, natural place to start in the Bay Area,” said Pradeep Nair, the foundation's head. He said the organization's immediate priority is launching community and cricket programs while building long-term partnerships to support future generations.

Harinarayan said the foundation builds on the Unicorns' existing community initiatives and seeks to create a broader grassroots movement.

"We want to take this one step further and deliver a grassroots movement that harnesses the power of cricket and the San Francisco Unicorns brand to be a real driving force for good in the Bay Area and beyond,” he said.

The foundation is currently establishing partnerships with community organizations and plans to begin its initial cricket and outreach programs across the region.
