Indian American Mayor Samip “Sam” Joshi has won the Democratic primary for mayor of Edison, New Jersey, defeating two challengers to secure the party's nomination for re-election.

With all 78 districts reporting, Joshi received 8,717 votes in the June 10 primary, defeating Indian American businessman Lav Patel, who earned 2,245 votes, and Councilman Richard Brescher, who received 1,893, according to the Middlesex County Clerk’s office.

He will now face Republican Gloria Dittman, the former president of the Edison Arts Society, in the general election on Nov. 4. Dittman ran unopposed in the GOP primary and received 2,103 votes.

Joshi made history in 2022 as the youngest and first Indian American to become mayor of Edison. The son of immigrants from India, he grew up in the township and has focused his platform on development, public safety, and inclusive governance.

Singh wins in South Jersey

Balvir Singh, also of Indian origin, won the Democratic nomination for State Assembly in New Jersey’s 7th legislative district, defeating Bordentown Mayor Eric Holliday, according to projections by the New Jersey Globe.

Singh, the party-endorsed candidate, held key fundraising and organizational advantages in the race. Holliday ran as part of Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop’s Assembly slate.

This marks Singh’s second win this year. In January, he was selected by members of the Burlington County Democratic Committee to fill a vacant Assembly seat after Rep. Herb Conaway moved to Congress. Singh is a former Burlington County commissioner.

Born in a small village in Punjab, India, Singh moved to the U.S. as a child and graduated from Burlington City High School.
