In a significant reshaping of the State Department’s South and Central Asia Bureau, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has proposed extending the mandate of the official currently overseeing India and Bhutan also to handle Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.

The State Department reorganization plan, submitted to Congress on May 29, would leave Afghanistan and Pakistan under a separate deputy assistant secretary. The reshuffle reduces the number of Deputy Assistant Secretaries (DAS) in the South and Central Asia Bureau of the State Department from four to three. This is aimed at streamlining regional operations under a new structure, aligning with the Trump Administration’s efficiency and cost-saving goals.
