Santa Clara University has appointed Indian-American educator Ravi Bapna as the next dean of its Leavey School of Business.

As dean, Bapna will serve as the school’s chief academic and executive officer, overseeing its undergraduate, graduate and executive education programs, faculty and research institutes. He will also serve as the Mario L. Belotti Professor of Business and continue teaching and conducting research.

Bapna said Santa Clara’s location in Silicon Valley and its combination of technological innovation and mission-driven education made the position particularly appealing.

“I look forward to working alongside our faculty, students, alumni, and industry partners to build bold, scalable programs and lifelong learning relationships that position Leavey graduates as the core workforce of Silicon Valley companies and beyond. Together, we will use the power of entrepreneurship and innovation to make the world a better place,” Bapna said in a statement.

“Ravi is a dynamic academic leader who brings a rare combination of visionary leadership, deep expertise in emerging technology, and a commitment to human-centered, ethical innovation,” said university provost and executive vice president James M. Glaser.

At the University of Minnesota, Bapna co-founded the Master of Science in Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence program and established the Analytics for Good Institute, which uses data science to address social challenges, including housing equity. He has also designed analytics and digital transformation programs for Fortune 500 companies and taught executive education programs at institutions including New York University’s Stern School of Business and the Indian School of Business.

Bapna’s research focuses on social media, the economics of AI and digital transformation. He has received several honors, including the INFORMS ISS Distinguished Fellow Award and the Haim Mendelson Teaching Innovation Award.

He holds a doctorate in business administration from the University of Connecticut, a bachelor’s degree in commerce from St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta, and a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology.
