In a major international deal, the overseas theatrical rights for Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Coolie have been sold for US$7.85 million (68 crore INR) making it the second-highest overseas rights sale in the history of Tamil cinema.
This milestone surpasses the previous overseas sale of Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life and the film now sits just behind Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, which continues to hold the top spot.
The rights were acquired by Ayngaran International, which specializes in distributing South Indian films in markets like the United States, the UK, Malaysia, the Middle East, and Australia.

Industry observers say this deal highlights Rajinikanth’s persistent global draw, especially among Tamil-speaking diaspora audiences. With the film’s production budget estimated at $40 million, this advance sale covers nearly 19 percent of total costs, providing strong financial cushioning before its theatrical release on August 14, 2025, in both standard and IMAX formats.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Sun Pictures, Coolie features a star-studded cast including Shruti Haasan, Pooja Hegde, Upendra, and Soubin Shahir. Analysts view this record deal as indicative of Tamil cinema's rising premium in global markets solidifying its position in the era of pan-Indian blockbusters.
With heightened expectations overseas what happens at the box office, especially against other big releases like War 2, will be watched closely.
