California-based agritech company UpTerra appointed Indian-origin executive Shiv Tiwari as its new chief science officer.
Tiwari will oversee scientific strategy and the development of UpTerra’s flagship product, TerraFlow, which uses patent-pending vortexing and frequency imprinting technology to improve water uptake and nutrient absorption in plants while reducing runoff and evaporation losses.

Describing UpTerra’s mission as transformative for global agriculture, Tiwari said the company “turns water into a force for global food productivity, soil renewal, and healthier animals — and planet.”
Before joining UpTerra, Tiwari served as chief executive officer and chief technology officer at GreenVenus, where he led the company from concept to commercial readiness.
His tenure included steering multiple biotech products through regulatory approvals and field trials, such as non-browning avocado and postharvest-optimized lettuce, and building partnerships across industry and government sectors.
He previously held senior roles in venture capital, biotechnology, and research and development at Third Security, Intrexon (later renamed Precigen), Mendel Biotechnology, and Corteva Agriscience (formerly DuPont Pioneer).
At Corteva, he was part of the team behind a patented system that enabled rapid regeneration and transformation of hardy corn varieties—a development that advanced maize product lines in the seed industry.
An active researcher, Tiwari has authored more than 25 scientific papers cited over 6,000 times and holds more than a dozen patents in plant and animal sciences. His academic career includes teaching and research appointments at the University of Missouri, Northeastern University, and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
Tiwari earned his doctorate in life sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University, a masters of business administration from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, and a master’s degree in molecular biology and biotechnology from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology. He also conducted postdoctoral research and served on the faculty at the University of Missouri–Columbia.
UpTerra’s technology is currently deployed across more than 40,000 acres in the United States, serving about 300 farms growing row crops, orchards, and specialty crops.
The company applies advanced physics within existing irrigation systems to restructure and enhance water, aiming to improve infiltration, uniformity, and nutrient transport for measurable gains in yield and efficiency.
