Telangana to name a road after President Trump

The South Indian state capital plans to name a major street after the U.S. President – the first of its kind.

In a plot twist few saw coming, the government of Telangana state in India has announced that the road running alongside the U.S. Consulate General in capital city Hyderabad will soon be named “Donald Trump Avenue.”

In a part of India that sends some of the largest numbers of immigrants, students, and tech workers to the United States, drivers will soon be navigating via Trump Avenue on their way to visa interviews.

The decision fits into a larger state push to rename major roads after well-known global figures and big tech companies — a mix of civic branding, outreach, and a dash of political theater.

The announcement, through a media release, comes just as Telangana prepares for the Telangana Rising Global Summit, a major investment showcase at the new Bharat Future City.

State officials plan to inform India’s Ministry of External Affairs and the U.S. Embassy about the change.

For Americans who may not be familiar with the region, Telangana—especially its capital, Hyderabad—is one of India’s most U.S.-bound states. Every year, thousands of residents head to the U.S. for tech jobs, higher education, and family reunification. Hyderabad’s U.S. Consulate is among the busiest in South Asia, processing visa applicants who often joke that half their hometown already lives in New Jersey, Dallas, or the Bay Area.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy floated the idea of naming key roads in Hyderabad after leading global corporations and personalities earlier this year while speaking at the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum in Washington, D.C.

Now the city is going all in: A stretch near Google’s upcoming mega-campus—its largest outside the United States—will be dubbed “Google Street”. A traffic junction will soon be known as Wipro Junction. A new road will become Microsoft Road.

While India already sports Trump Towers in Mumbai, Pune, and Kolkata—with another coming up in the Delhi region—this will be the first time an Indian street carries his name.
