Dr. Tarunjit Singh Butalia, Executive Director of Religions for Peace USA, received a lifetime achievement award at the 8th International Conference on World Religions held at Minhaj University in Lahore. The two-day conference took place under the theme 'Building Resilient Societies: Preventing Extremism at its Roots'.
The event marked acknowledgment of Dr. Butalia’s longstanding contributions to interfaith work and his efforts in preserving Sikh heritage. His involvement in international peace initiatives and cross-cultural engagement has positioned him as an influential figure in global interfaith leadership.
The award was presented by Dr. Hussain Qadri, Chairman of Minhaj University, and Vice-Chancellor Dr. S.M. Shahzad. The ceremony also honored Bishop Samuel Robert Azariah, Director of the Christian Study Center in Rawalpindi, with a national lifetime award.
The conference brought together scholars and faith leaders from multiple countries to discuss ways to strengthen interfaith dialogue and improve social cohesion as societies confront rising polarization and intolerance. Speakers emphasized the need for sustained engagement between communities to reduce the appeal of extremist narratives.
In his remarks, Dr. Butalia thanked the university and organizers. He said the recognition reflects broader collective work undertaken by many individuals and institutions committed to advancing interfaith cooperation. He highlighted dialogue as essential for reducing divisions and promoting understanding between communities with differing beliefs.
Conference discussions focused on shared responsibility in addressing root causes of extremism, including social alienation and mistrust. Participants examined how religious institutions, academic bodies, and civil society can collaborate to support peaceful coexistence.
