FIA honors Sardar Patel on his 150th birth anniversary

The lasting contributions of Sardar Patel were spotlighted through the celebratory Unity Walk.

The Federation of Indian Associations (FI) Chicago Chapter, organized a Unity Walk in celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The Oct. 25 celebration witnessed over 60 participants to honor Sardar Patel's legacy by doing a mile-long walk.

Before starting the walk, the American National Anthem and the Indian National Anthem were played. FIA President Hemant Patel addressed the attendees and highlighted the legacy and role of Sardar Patel in the Indian Freedom Movement and also his enduring contributions to the country in the nascent stages of its independence.

FIA Trustees Kantibhai N. Patel, Dr. Rashmi Patel, Rakesh Malhotra and Hina Trivedi and Executives Amar Upadhyay, Joy (Dipen) Shah, Anil Singh, Arvind Ankleshwaria attended the celebration.

Several community leaders participated in the anniversary celebrations, including, Haribhai Patel, Sanjay Vora, Manish Patel, Hashmukh Patel, Vandana Jhingan, Anurag Awasthi, Dipti Desai, Ravi Narumanchi, Phani Krishna, Harish Patel, Bhavesh (Bob) Patel, Harish Topiwala, Bhanubhai Vyas, Smitesh Shah, Harshad Shah, Prakash Anturkar and Gokul Shah.

FIA Executive Amar Upadhyay, in his address, highlighted Sardar Patel's decisive role in freeing Hyderabad and Junagadh.  

Haribhai Patel, Dr. Rashmibhai Patel, and Sanjay Vora proposed installing a Statue of Unity in Chicagoland to honor the freedom fighter's legacy and 89-year-old Kantibhai Patel shared memories from her childhood about Sardar Patel's aid to villagers in their resistance against British oppression.

The youngest participant, 9-year-old Aarav Ankleshwaria, along with Kalpana Shah and Kantibhai Patel, were recognized as Unity Walk awardees.
