The University of Newcastle, Australia, has awarded the International Leadership Award, as part of the university's Alumni Excellence Awards, to Dr. Shyam Bishen.
Working for the World Economic Forum, Bishen currently heads the Centre for Health & Healthcare in Geneva. He brings together world leaders, CEOs, and international directors to build stronger health systems, prepare for pandemics, and reduce global health gaps, shaping agendas that improve lives worldwide.

Dr. Bishen has over 20 years of global health leadership experience, advancing equity, resilient systems, and the COVID-19 response in his current role. He has also worked with major organizations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Bishen is an alumnus of the Lucknow University in India. He went on to obtain an MBA from Washington University. He also undertook leadership training at Harvard, and earned a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Newcastle. Early in his career, he entered academia, serving as an Assistant Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Expressing joy over the International Leadership Award, Bishen highlighted the evolution of his understanding of leadership and remarked, “Living and working across five continents and doing business in over 50 countries has shaped my view of leadership in profound ways.”
"A proud University of Newcastle alumnus, he carries his Australian education into the most influential rooms in the world, shaping the future of healthcare and creating opportunities for those too often left behind," the University described Bishen in a statement.
Newcastle University has awarded the Alumni Excellence Award to over 200 alumni members since 1975. The awardees are honored for shaping the world and inspiring the next generation to follow in their footsteps.
