Marking a major milestone against the anti-Hindu rhetoric seen in parts of Canada, the Mississauga City Council has unanimously passed a resolution condemning Hinduphobia.
The decision by the city council came in light of recent incidents of anti-Hindu hate reported across Canada and more specifically, in Mississauga. The incidents include instances of temple vandalisms, misinformation and online harassment about local Hindu events and harassment of Hindu students in local schools. The resolution noted that such instances have created "anxiety and fear among Hindu residents."
The resolution also reiterated the council's stance against all forms of hate and discrimination and noted that it is important to "recognize and denounce anti-Hindu hate."
The city council said, "Mississauga City Council formally denounces anti-Hindu hate in all its forms, including verbal, physical, digital, or institutional acts of hate and discrimination directed at Hindu individuals, organizations, or places of worship."
It also reaffirmed its commitment to "protecting freedom of religion and belief for all residents", as guaranteed by law.
The council also directed its officials to work with Peel Regional Police in combating hate and promoting mutual understanding.
The motion for the resolution was introduced by City Councillor Dipika Damerla.
Damerla expressed joy over the decision and said on X, "City of Mississauga becomes the first city in Ontario to formally recognize Anti Hindu Hate. Thank you to Mississauga council for unanimous support and to all those who delegated."
Community organization CoHNA (Coalition of Hindus of North America)- Canada also expressed its excitement and shared on X, "It is a huge relief coming after years of rising violence against temples and Hindu individuals."
