Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi appealed to Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, requesting a classified briefing on the ground realities of the U.S.-Iran conflict, in light of the contrast between the president’s claims of peace and reports of continued hostilities.
In a letter dated May 5, Krishnamoorthi, a senior member of the House Oversight Committee, described the Trump administration’s characterization of the conflict as “not just misleading” but aimed at “evading congressional authority under the War Powers Resolution.”
Spotlighting U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of peace and a ceasefire amid continuing tensions, Krishnamoorthi claimed in a statement, “U.S. forces continue active naval operations and have engaged Iranian vessels in recent days in and around the Strait of Hormuz.”
He noted that these events underscore that “hostilities remain ongoing despite the administration’s claims.”

In his letter to Gabbard, the Democratic congressman wrote, “I write to you today to express my serious concern that President Trump has falsely informed Congress that after 60 days, the war with Iran has been ‘terminated’ — all while the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and naval enforcement operations continue, and the underlying ceasefire arrangement remains contested and unstable.”
In the same letter, he went on to accuse the president of “trying to misinform Congress and the American people” so that Trump can try to claim to be in compliance with the War Powers Resolution of 1973.
The resolution forbids U.S. armed forces from being engaged in hostilities for more than 60 days without congressional authorization.
Calling for a classified briefing, Krishnamoorthi demanded answers to his seven questions by May 15.
He demanded clarity on the “Intelligence Community’s current assessment of the status, durability and future of the hostilities.”
Krishnamoorthi also raised questions about Iran’s ability to sustain oil exports under blockade pressure and its ability to evade maritime restrictions. His other questions deal with the Intelligence Community’s assessment of Iran’s strategic intent regarding the Strait of Hormuz and the presence of indicators that would signal Iran is approaching a structural economic breaking point.
Krishnamoorthi concluded his letter by questioning whether the current policy is producing a “stable end state” or whether President Trump’s “erratic decision making” in the region will lead to more instability and uncertainty for the American people.
