Prema Wangjom Thongdok, an Arunachal Pradesh native Indian woman living in the UK was recently stopped and held in transit for around 18 hours in China's Shanghai Pudong Airport. Chinese officials reportedly told her that Arunachal Pradesh is a part of China and therefore her Passport, which mentions her place of birth as Arunachal Pradesh, is invalid.
Thongdok, living in the UK for over a decade now, is a Financial Advisor in London and was travelling to Japan, with a three hour halt in China.
Alleging harassment and mocking, Thongdok claimed that the airport officials even asked her to obtain a Chinese passport. Thungdok proceeded to contact the Indian consulate in Shanghai, even though six officials from the consulate reached the spot, they were unable to persuade the Chinese airport officials.
