Indian Consulate in Shanghai honors yoga leaders ahead of June summit

Consul General Pratik Mathur invited yoga practitioners to visit India and experience its rich civilizational heritage.

The Consul General of India in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur, hosted a special event on May 17 to felicitate the organizers of the upcoming Yoga and Pilates Summit of China in the lead-up to the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026.

Previously held in Beijing in 2024, the summit will take place in Shanghai from June 16 to 19, 2026.

The event is expected to bring together thousands of yoga practitioners, wellness experts and students from around the world for the first time in Shanghai.

Talking to attendees, CGI Mathur highlighted the growing global appeal of yoga and underscored the historic scale of preparations underway for the 12th edition of the International Day of Yoga.

He also spotlighted the wide-ranging events planned for IDY 2026, covering the broader AYUSH ecosystem, including Ayurveda, mindfulness and holistic wellness traditions, reflecting the enduring and expanding global impact of Indian culture and wellness traditions.

CGI Mathur appreciated the strong enthusiasm for IDY 2026 in Shanghai, one of the world’s leading commercial and international cities that hosts one of the largest concentrations of yoga studios globally.

He observed that the scale of participation and growing interest in yoga further underscore its universal appeal as an instrument for wellness, harmony and peace.

Encouraging deeper people-to-people exchanges, the consul general invited yoga practitioners and wellness enthusiasts to visit India and experience its rich civilizational heritage, traditional wellness systems and longstanding cultural linkages with the region.

International Day of Yoga is observed every year on June 21 worldwide. It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The day promotes yoga as a holistic practice for physical, mental and spiritual well-being and celebrates the ancient Indian tradition’s growing global popularity for health, harmony and peace.
