British Indian Tushar Kumar appointed mayor of U.K. town

Before being appointed mayor, Kumar, a Labour Party candidate, was serving as a councillor from Borehamwood Hillside.

Twenty-three-year-old Tushar Kumar, the new mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood in southern Hertfordshire, England, has scripted history by becoming the youngest Indian-origin mayor of the U.K.

Passionate about youth empowerment, education and community development, he actively supports literacy initiatives with Bookmark Reading Charity and organizes inclusive community events.

Announcing his new appointment, Kumar said on LinkedIn, “An incredible honour to officially become the Mayor of Elstree & Borehamwood last night and, at 23 years old, the youngest ever Indian-origin Mayor in the history of the United Kingdom.”

He continued, “I am truly humbled by the trust placed in me and incredibly grateful for all the support, kindness and encouragement I have received throughout this journey.”

Sharing his views after being sworn in, Kumar thanked all the attendees of the “Mayor Making Ceremony” held at Fairway Hall. He also thanked everyone who has supported him over the years, highlighting the contributions of the residents, community organizations and fellow councillors who backed him, as well as his friends and family who believed in him.

Outlining his plans, Kumar noted, “As Mayor, I want to focus on being present within the community, supporting local organisations and charities, and inspiring more young people to get involved in public service and community life.”

He added, “It is the privilege of a lifetime to serve the town I love.”

Before being appointed mayor, Kumar, a Labour Party candidate, was serving as a councillor from Borehamwood Hillside. Appointed in 2023, he holds a degree in political science from King’s College London and professional experience as a policy adviser at the Department for Work and Pensions and research analyst for a national LGBTQ+ charity.

Along with Kumar, Councillor Linda Smith was appointed deputy mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood.
