Indian American leaders hail Mamdani's win
At 34, Mamdani becomes the city’s youngest mayor and the first from both the Indian-American and Muslim communities to hold the office—a symbolic milestone for immigrant representation in American politics.

Indian-American leaders and community figures across the United States celebrated Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York City’s first Indian-American and Muslim mayor, describing his victory as a watershed moment for representation and immigrant empowerment.
“It is wonderful that for the first time, an Indian American won as the mayor of America’s largest city,” said Thomas Abraham, Chairman of GOPIO International. “In 50 years, it has completely changed. Rep. Mamdani’s win further confirms that Indian Americans have reached the mainstream of not only New York politics but also American politics.”
Dilip Chauhan, former Deputy Comptroller of Nassau County and an early supporter, described Mamdani’s success as inspiring. “Congratulations, Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani! His vision to make New York better is evident, and tonight’s results reflect the people’s trust in him. He inspires hope for a brighter future and stands as a role model for every immigrant,” Chauhan said.

He noted how the moment symbolized not just a political triumph but also the growing visibility of Indian Americans in U.S. public life.

New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar posted her congratulations, commending Mamdani’s campaign and expressing enthusiasm about collaborating to strengthen city governance. Her message mixed celebration with humor, signaling camaraderie and optimism for the city’s political future.

Suhag A. Shukla, executive director and co-founder of the Hindu American Foundation, offered a more cautious reflection. While acknowledging the historic importance of Mamdani’s win, she urged that his leadership prioritize unity over divisiveness and ensure representation for all New Yorkers. Her post conveyed both optimism and accountability, emphasizing the weight of expectations that come with such a groundbreaking victory.

Mamdani’s defeat of former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who captured 41 percent of the vote, marks a generational and ideological turning point for New York City. Mamdani won decisively with more than 570,000 votes. He is to take oath in Jan. 2026.
