A recent New York Times article on the political legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has sparked criticism from some members of the Indian diaspora, including Indian-American author and commentator Indu Viswanathan, who accused the newspaper of misrepresenting the historical figure's place in Indian public life.

The article, published on May 31, examined how Shivaji Maharaj's legacy has been invoked in contemporary Indian politics. Under the headline, "India's Hindu Right Has a New Hero: A 17th-Century Warrior King," the piece argued that the Maratha ruler has become an increasingly important symbol for Hindu nationalist groups and political leaders.
