IIT Bombay hosted a delegation from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) on Feb. 16, 2026, for academic discussions and to formalize a proposed undergraduate exchange program between the two institutions.

The visit included leadership meetings, curriculum discussions and faculty presentations, and concluded with the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the IITB–UIUC Undergraduate Cohort Exchange Programme.

The exchange is designed to allow students from both institutions to study on each other’s campuses through joint academic engagement and shared cohorts. The first trial cohort is planned for the 2026–27 academic year and will target third-year undergraduate students.

Under the plan, IIT Bombay students will have the opportunity to undertake a two-month internship in the United States after their third year, with earning potential.

The pilot phase will begin with six IIT Bombay departments: aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and metallurgical engineering and materials science.

The institutions said the program is intended to serve as the foundation for a broader long-term partnership. Future plans include potential postgraduate exchanges, joint or integrated degree programs, cotutelle pathways and collaborative research initiatives.
